Headaches and Chiropractic Care

Headaches are incredibly common and they affect just about everyone. In fact, nearly 45 million Americans complain of headaches each year - that’s about one in every six people! Unfortunately for many, the pain relief options available are temporary at best. While many turn to over-the-counter medications for relief, studies have shown that they can actually cause problems in your kidney or liver over time. Worse yet, they don't even correct the underlying cause of the headache. Fortunately though, chiropractic care focuses on determining and treating the root cause of your pain, not just the pain itself.

Types of Headaches

Most chronic headache cases are caused by mechanical problems in the neck and/or blood flow problems. Your spine protects your nervous system which starts with the brain and becomes the spinal cord. When the vertebrae in your neck are unable to move properly, it irritates or puts pressure on the nerves in that area. This irritation can cause headaches. To correct this problem, your chiropractor gently adjusts the vertebrae.

It is important to understand which type of headache you are suffering from, especially when it comes to creating a treatment plan with your chiropractor. Here are the most common types of headaches we treat:

Tension – these headaches are the most common, affecting nearly 75% of headache suffers. Tension headaches typically last from 30 minutes to several days and in some cases, chronic tension headaches can last for months.

Migraine Headaches – migraines are intense and throbbing headaches that are often associated with nausea and sensitivity to light and/or noise. These headaches can last from as little as a few hours to as long as a few days.

Cluster Headaches – this type of headache is often short in duration, is very painful and often felt on one side of the head behind the eyes. The reason that they are called ‘cluster' headaches is that they tend to occur one to four times per day over a period of several days. After one cluster of headaches is over, it may be months or even years, before they occur again.

Chiropractic Treatment

Each individual's case is different and requires a thorough evaluation before a proper course of chiropractic care can be determined. However, in most cases of tension headaches, significant improvement is accomplished through manipulation of the upper vertebrae coupled with adjustments. Chiropractors are the only healing professionals that are trained to analyze and correct vertebrae problems that are linked to headaches. Through spinal manipulation and chiropractic adjustments, your doctor is able to improve spinal function and alleviate stress on your system that is causing headaches.
